Press Statement: Repositioning Nigerian Youth as National Assets Round Table Discussion Forum
AfriGrowth Foundation, which is in the front line of instituting a course of reflection and focus for renewed action centered on adding values to the lives of Nigerian youth, recently facilitated a strategic roundtable session with the theme- Repositioning Nigerian Youth as National Assets.
The core objectives of the roundtable were to:
—Review, share and exchange views, ideas, knowledge and experiences regarding engagement of youth in past and current programs.
—Highlight the factors that promote or inhibit youth participation in nation building.
—Develop progressive strategies on how to effectively reposition youth as national assets.
—Discuss the incorporation and integration of core African values and value reorientation in youth-focused programs.
—Chart new ways and methods for participation of youth in program conception, planning and implementation.
Ten non-governmental organizations, including AfriGrowth Foundation, participated in the roundtable session; and there was plausible exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences regarding youth engagement. The participating organizations were Youth Afrique Leadership Forum, Young Stars Foundation, Global Family Peacemakers Initiative, Rural Youth Empowerment Network, Sanctity Transparency & Peace Initiatives, Youth Reformation and Awareness Centre, Youth Initiative for Sustainable Agriculture Nigeria, Outstanding Citizens Humanitarian Initiative and AIESEC.
The roundtable session was highly interactive and above all strategic with the representatives of the participating organization making vital inputs and contributions. A high point in the event was the consensus that the psyche of Nigerian youth need to be changed via value reorientation. Thus all organizations ascended that there must be the incorporation and integration of African values in youth-focused programs.
At the end of the roundtable session a coalition was formed, which constituted of the ten participating organizations with the core intent of chartering new sustainable ways on how to effectively Reposition Nigerian youth as National Assets. The first step in a sequence of subsequent activities was to review and monitor policies, which reflect directly on effective youth participation in in nation building.
