The Importance of Providing Clean and Safe Water To Those In NEED
2016 is a year the pupils of LEA primary school and community of Paipe Idu yard will never forget in a hurry, the year their constant yearning for clean and safe water eases out. According to Sunday Nodoma a primary 6 pupil of the school said “it’s still like a dream” that he does not have to worry about the burden of carrying heavy containers from the stream, the pain on how to get drinking water in the school was put to rest. Hope Haruna a member of the community in her words said, “it has saved us from spending so much treating ourselves from diseases,” same revelation Blessing Edet of primary 5 shared, that it has “reduce the rate of them falling sick” in their homes.
Paipe Community is located at Idu yard inside Abuja municipal area council of the FCT, this is where a borehole water intervention project was completed and handed over to the community, a project powered by AfriGrowth Foundation funded by Atlas Copco Nigeria to meet the dying needs of the community for free, clean and save water supply.
With Nigeria ranked 134 amongst 178 countries in the world in terms of Environmental performance index where safe water and hygiene is included, it tells us there is more to do in providing clean and safe accessible water supplies. Statistics shows that 90% of similar rural communities get their water from an unhealthy source (wells, river, and stream) with series of impurities. The unsafe water is usually brownish, tasty, comes with odour, constant human activities done around or in the water especially streams or river where clothes are washed, bathing, toileting in or around the water and sometimes livestock drink directly from this same water that human beings really on for daily domestic use.
It is no longer an argument that the Nigerian government is finding it difficult to provide this basic need, and the question is what are “You and I” doing about it? Half the hospital beds in developing countries are filled with people suffering from diseases caused by poor water, sanitation and hygiene; Around 315,000 children under-five die every day from diarrhea diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. That’s 900 children per day, or one child every two minutes. Pondering on this findings shared by UNDP and WHO, bring the question again, How have you and me helped?
Think back to the last time you helped someone that genuinely appreciated it, am sure you felt good and wish to do more and this is what is being ask of you today. Make helping a priority, create time in making others happy, be concerned and above all, show love. No amount of kindness is too small, contact us and join the campaign of providing clean and safe water supply for all.
